According to statistical observations by the Ternopil Scientific Research Forensic Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, 14.3% of accidents related to vehicle technical malfunctions occur due to tread wear. The total number of traffic accidents in Ukraine in 2025 was 25,934, with technical malfunctions accounting for approximately 3,125, meaning around 500 accidents could have been prevented by timely tire replacement. As tires wear out, their performance characteristics gradually deteriorate. Continuing to use old car tires is dangerous for several reasons:

  • worn tires respond poorly to steering inputs, increasing the vehicle's response time and reducing stability during maneuvering;
  • as tread depth decreases, road grip worsens and braking distance increases significantly, especially on wet surfaces;
  • old tires perform poorly during emergency braking, sudden lane changes, and high-speed driving.

High-quality new tires provide stability on both dry and wet asphalt, significantly reducing the likelihood of skidding. This ensures safety and confidence in your actions under any road conditions.

Main Signs That Tires Need Replacing

In addition to natural wear, the durability of the material can be negatively affected by mechanical damage and the appearance of internal defects that cannot be fixed by repair. Common signs of tire wear include:

  • uneven wear of specific surface areas;
  • cracks on the tire sidewall caused by rubber aging;
  • bulges indicating damage to the internal carcass;
  • critical tread wear;
  • deep cuts that compromise structural integrity;
  • punctures that cannot be repaired;
  • tread separation from the base;
  • carcass deformation.

Any of these defects can lead to a sudden loss of pressure or a blowout while driving, so you shouldn't delay your visit to the tire shop.

What Should the Minimum Tread Depth Be?

The tread pattern channels water away, provides road grip, reduces the risk of hydroplaning, and helps the vehicle maintain stability during braking. When is tire replacement necessary? According to current legislation, the minimum tread depth for passenger cars is 1.6 mm, but it is better not to let it reach this figure. Recommended parameters:

  • for summer tires – from 3 mm;
  • for winter tires – 4 mm.

Don't wait for the tread to wear out completely: even at a remaining depth of 2–3 mm, performance deteriorates significantly, especially in the rain. You can measure the depth yourself using a special tool – a tread depth gauge – or rely on the wear indicators provided by the manufacturer.

How Many Years Before You Need to Replace Car Tires?

Even with infrequent vehicle use, rubber gradually ages. Under the influence of oxygen, sunlight, temperature fluctuations, and moisture, the material's structure changes, causing it to lose its original elasticity. It is also important to consider several key factors:

  • the recommended service life for most manufacturers' tires is about 6 years;
  • the maximum lifespan is approximately 10 years, even if the external condition is good;
  • rubber aging leads to microcracks, reduced elasticity, and worse grip.

The manufacturing date and age of the tire can be easily determined by the DOT code on the sidewall: the last 4 digits indicate the week and year of production. This is an important criterion to consider: even with good tread, the surface may lose a significant portion of its original properties after excessively long use, compromising safety.

How Operating Conditions Affect Tire Lifespan

Durability depends not only on the quality of the product but also on the conditions of its subsequent use. Even an expensive set can wear out much earlier than the manufacturer claims under the influence of the following factors:

  • an aggressive driving style with frequent sharp accelerations and stops;
  • constant high-speed driving accompanied by severe tire overheating;
  • vehicle overloading, which increases pressure on the tire carcass;
  • poor roads leading to impacts, cuts, and damage to the internal structure;
  • frequent temperature fluctuations that accelerate material aging;
  • prolonged periods of the car sitting idle, during which the rubber gradually deforms;
  • incorrect tire pressure, causing accelerated wear of the central or shoulder areas of the tread.

All this leads to a rapid reduction in the service life of car tires. Therefore, you need to consider not only the stated age but also the specifics of usage. Following the manufacturer's recommendations will significantly extend the operating period, and the original characteristics will be maintained throughout the calculated lifespan.

Signs of Uneven Tire Wear and What They Indicate

Experienced mechanics can identify suspension problems or maintenance errors just by looking at the tread. Common patterns and their consequences:

  • incorrect wheel alignment – causes accelerated wear on the inner or outer side of the tread;
  • wheel imbalance – leads to the appearance of characteristic spots and wave-like wear;
  • faulty suspension – localized areas of increased wear;
  • incorrect pressure – leads to wear in the center or shoulder zones of the tire;
  • vehicle overloading – shortens the lifespan of the entire contact patch and additionally stresses the sidewalls.

When such signs appear, it is important not only to replace the tires but also to eliminate the underlying cause. Otherwise, the new set will also fail quickly.

When to Change Summer and Winter Tires

Each rubber compound is designed for a specific temperature range and works most efficiently only under appropriate conditions. Basic recommendations:

  • when to switch to summer tires – when the stable average daily temperature is above +7 °C;
  • when to install winter tires – when the temperature drops to +7 °C and below.

Using winter tires in summer leads to rapid wear, poorer handling, and increased braking distances. Summer tires in winter lose elasticity, become stiff, and provide almost no necessary grip on snow and ice. An all-season set is a good compromise, but only for regions with mild climates, without extreme snowfalls and low temperatures.

When to change car tires is purely a matter of personal responsibility. But it is worth remembering the importance of ensuring the safety of the driver and passengers, which means regularly checking the tread condition, promptly identifying damage, and following seasonal operating rules.
